There has been so much hype around this book, and that scared me at first because most of the time when a book has a lot of hype surrounding it, it doesn’t live up to it. But OMG did this book meet the mark. This was one of the books that took me weeks to read because I was savoring every last bit of it.
Release date: June 28th 2016
Series: The Conquerors Saga #1
What grabbed my attention when learning about this book was how it puts a new spin on the Dracula tale. While it’s more true to the real life of Vlad the Impaler, it switches it up by making him…a her! I thought that was so unique and I couldn’t wait to dive in immediately.
NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL.
And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.
Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.
But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point. -Via Goodreads
The story follows Lada and her brother through their childhood into young adults. I love how much depth and character development occurred through out the book. Both of them lived in a cold environment without much family love. And then they are suddenly thrown into a whole new world and all on their own. Following them as each of them coped, leading them to become the person they grew up to be.
To be honest, I have nothing bad or negative to say about this book, which is extremely rare. I absolutely loved it and it is now in my top 5 favorite book of all time! Wow, this just completely blew me away. It was so rich and full of unique characters, and there is at least one that each reader will be able to relate to. But what I really loved were the descriptions of Wallachia and the different parts of the Ottoman Empire. The world building was fantastic, and I really felt transported to another time while reading. The plot is full of turns and will keep you glue all the way through. I love historical fiction, and this was so much fun to read from that aspect as well. I so sad that I have to wait another year for the second book, I want to read it now!!!
If you’re looking for vampires, this won’t be the book for you. Nothing supernatural here. However, if you love history, romance, and Game of Thrones (lots of political intrigue and fighting) then you need to run and pick this book up June 28th!
